His father supported him by buying him canvas, brushes, paints and magazines. However, a more important role as sponsor was taken over by Pepito Pitchot, who set up for him an atelier in a barn. Dalí painted landscapes in the impressionist style and he also developed his own ideas. Pepito Pitchot was impressed by this idea; so much so that he promised to talk Señor Dalí into allowing Salvador to receive lessons in painting.

The young student did not hold many of his teachers at the academy in very high esteem; for him they were too modern.
