22 Slice groundstroke sequence. Shot Sequencing This shot-sequencing drill helps players develop consistent strokes while increasing their decision-making skills. This exercise is easily adapted to a player’s forehand or backhand side. Advanced players may even combine both strokes in a random fashion. A ball machine or feeding coach is required for this drill. Begin with the player standing on the baseline on the center hash mark. Balls are fed to the player, who returns them in a sequence of the four types of forehands (or backhands): primary drive, high-looping topspin, short-angle topspin shot, and slice shot.

Once the player is comfortable with the sequence, begin to incorporate flexible skills training. This is done by having the player call out his intended shot before hitting the ball. For instance, shouting “angle” would mean hitting a short-angle stroke. The sequence is entirely up to the player. This quick decision-making drill helps a player reduce hesitation because it speeds up the motor program (the signal transferred from the brain to the muscle groups). Quicker decisions equate to smoother strokes and fewer unforced errors.
