CHEA states that recognition shall be understood to convey only that the organization meets CHEA’s standards. Such recognition is not in any way intended to infringe on the right of any academic institution to determine for itself whether it should or should not affiliate with any accrediting organization. S. federal government, through the USDE, also recognizes accrediting organizations. Federal, as distinct from CHEA, recognition aims to assure that the standards of accrediting organizations meet expectations for institutional and program participation in federal initiatives, such as student aid.

Recently there have been some requests for combining accreditation scheduling into strategic and operational planning, and this book describes several examples of managing accreditation processes effectively through proper planning, funding, and evaluation, which are described later in this book. However, for most colleges and universities today, the accreditation process is largely seen as a required and unpleasant task that is put forth by semigovernmental organizations that are not usually viewed by most people as supportive to the institution.
