They were denied the opportunity to offer their perspectives regarding the lives of their children, which would have informed the organizers about the best way to work with the students and the African American community. That lack of involvement prevented a true investment in this project by the families and their communities. The manner in which this project was implemented also failed to address the racial and cultural location of the students involved. The discourse around this work failed to acknowledge that what we had been invited to view was the work of African American children offering us a snapshot of their world, a world experienced at or below the poverty line and effected by the social services and criminal justice system.
